There are a mass amount of interesting theories out there about existence itself, but this one has to top the list of most interesting!
There are many different ideas as to what put us here, how we got here, or what we are supposed to be doing. This is the basis of virtually every religion out there. People have hypothesized this ever since the beginning of time. There are tons of different theories, but personally, I find Scientist Nick Bostrom’s simulation theory the most fascinating.
This professor of Philosophy at Oxford University suggests that everything we have ever done and will do is the product of a highly advanced computer code. That means every single memory and relationship was actually created by a massive amount of supercomputers. There are actually several different scientists and critically acclaimed researchers who support Bostrom’s theory. Nick Bostrom was not only a professor of Philosophy at Oxford University, is additionally the Director of The Future Of Humanity Institute and of the Program On The Impacts Of Future Technology at Oxford Martin School.
Rich Terrile, director of the Center For Evolutionary Computation and Automated Design at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory even suggests that we’re living in a simulated reality, according to his Vice Interview.
“Right now the fastest NASA supercomputers are cranking away at about double the speed of the human brain,” the NASA scientist told Vice.
“If you make a simple calculation using Moore’s Law [which roughly claims computers double in power every two years], you’ll find that these supercomputers, inside of a decade, will have the ability to compute an entire human lifetime of 80 years – including every thought ever conceived during that lifetime – in the span of a month.
“In quantum mechanics, particles do not have a definite state unless they’re being observed.
“Many theorists have spent a lot of time trying to figure out how you explain this.
“One explanation is that we’re living within a simulation, seeing what we need to see when we need to see it.”
“What I find inspiring is that even if we are in a simulation or many orders of magnitude down in levels of simulation, somewhere along the line something escaped the primordial ooze to become us and to result in simulations that made us – and that’s cool.”
Although many important and acclaimed scientists support the idea, there are always two sides to every debate. Professor Peter Millican, of Philosophy and Computer Sciences At Oxford University doesn’t quite support the theory. He believes it’s a healthy idea to exercise the mind, but not exactly supported at this point.
