7 Chakra Cleansing Herbs for Empaths and Healers

Energy is the very fabric of life, the very building blocks of all that we see.

When our energy is imbalanced due to a lack of present-mindedness, resisting certain experiences, and repressing our emotions, we experience energetic lethargy. Energetic lethargy is like stifling the flow of a crystal clear stream so that it becomes a stagnant cesspool of slime and illness.

Energy is meant to flow — that is it’s very nature. Anything that blocks that flow creates physical, emotional, and psychological sickness. In fact, you’ll notice that you feel the most vibrant and grounded when you are actively allowing yourself to experience the present moment. This is our natural state of being! And yet so many of us struggle to experience it.

If you’re an energy-sensitive person such as an empath or healer, you’ll know first-hand how much suffering can result in blocked energy. As a result of stagnant and murky energy, you might have experienced (or currently feel) the following symptoms:

  • Chronic muscle aches and pains
  • Poorly functioning immune system
  • Constant colds and flu
  • Skin problems such as acne and eczema
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Poor blood circulation
  • Lethargy and low energy
  • Chronic illnesses
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • High blood pressure
  • Lack of motivation
  • Irritability and mood swings

When Qi or prana life-force energy stops flowing, the chakra or energy-centers within our bodies become blocked. This cessation of flowing life-force energy makes it difficult for us to feel grounded, centered, energized, and full of joy for life. This is why chakra cleansing can be so useful and beneficial.

7 Chakra Cleansing Herbs For Empaths and Healers

There are many chakra cleansing methods out there, but one of my favorites are tea infusions because you receive immediate physical, mental and energetic benefits.

Not only are herbs a natural healing option, but they’re also easy to find. And the best thing is that most chakra cleansing herbs can be grown in your garden at a relatively low cost, and not much hassle.

Here are my top seven chakra cleansing and grounding herbs that I recommend for all people struggling with imbalanced chakras, and most especially empaths, healers, and highly sensitive people. If you want an extensive list of healing herbs for empathic people, check out my Empath book

The tea company I recommend is called Buddha Teas and has a beautiful selection of teas that are all organic certified, have bleach-free bags, and sustainable herbs. (Also, just so you know, these are affiliate links and we’ll receive a small commission at no extra cost to you if you decide to purchase any. Thank you!)

1. Root Chakra — Ashwagandha

The Root Chakra or Muladhara is responsible for our feelings of being grounded, safe and secure. If you have an imbalanced root chakra, you’ll struggle with problems such as:

    • Feeling disconnected from yourself and others
    • Worries about basic needs (food, money, shelter)
    • Never feeling “at home” anywhere you go
    • Persistent anxiety
    • Poor circulation
    • Eating disorders (obesity, anorexia)
    • Digestive problems

Ashwagandha, also known as Indian Ginseng or Winter Cherry, is an ayurvedic herb that has powerful root chakra cleansing properties.

Ashwagandha is a deeply strengthening and nourishing herb that reduces stress, helps increase blood flow, relieves anxiety and depression, and even has cancer-killing properties making it a powerful antioxidant. This herb also reduces inflammation, treats diabetes and cholesterol, and improves fertility.

You can buy a certified organic tea blend of Ashwagandha at Buddha Teas that is infused with the essence of Garnet. (On the other hand, you might prefer to get the convenient bundle of seven chakra teas for complete energetic harmonization.)

2. Sacral Chakra — Damiana

The Sacral Chakra or Swadhisthara is the center of sexuality and creativity. If you have an imbalanced Sacral Chakra, you’ll struggle with problems such as:

  • Sexual suppression and dysfunction
  • Emotional repression
  • Energetic lethargy
  • Lack of creativity
  • Demotivation
  • Infertility
  • Menstrual problems
  • Chronic lower back pain
  • Inability to emotionally open up to other people
  • Difficulty dealing with emotions
  • Coldness and indifference to others
  • Codependency and clinginess in relationships

Damiana is a plant native to the United States, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean, having potent sacral chakra cleansing properties.

Damiana is known most popularly for its aphrodisiac effects that increase sexual desire and performance. However, Damiana also has many other benefits such as calming the nervous system, reducing anxiety and depression and regulating blood sugar levels.

You can buy a certified organic tea blend of Damiana specifically created for the Sacral Chakra from Buddha Teas here. It’s also infused with the essence of Moonstone, which is a nice touch!  (Alternatively, you might prefer to get the enriching bundle of seven chakra teas for complete inner rejuvenation.)

3. Solar Plexus Chakra — Lemongrass

The Solar Plexus (Manipura), is the center of self and identity. If you have an imbalanced Solar Plexus Chakra, you’ll struggle with problems such as:

  • Low self-esteem
  • Egotism/narcissism
  • Lack of focus and motivation
  • Constant negative self-talk
  • Lack of confidence
  • Self-isolation
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Aggression and anger issues
  • Poor boundaries
  • Codependency
  • Addiction
  • Poor digestion
  • Inability to gain or lose weight

Lemongrass is a common herb often used in various dishes, yet it has significant Solar Plexus chakra cleansing benefits.

With a taste similar to lemon (except milder), Lemongrass helps to reduce depression, support the immune system, refresh the mind, cleanse and detoxify the body, improve digestion, and stabilize cholesterol. Almost anyone can grow this herb and harvest it to make tea!

If you would prefer to buy yours, you might like to try the certified organic tea blend of Lemongrass from Buddha Teas. Interestingly, it’s also infused with the essence of Citrine. You can get yours right here. (Or, you might like to try the bundle of seven chakra teas which is an affordable option, here.)

4. Heart Chakra — Hawthorn Berry

The Heart Chakra (Anahata), is responsible for our ability to give and receive love. If you have an imbalanced Heart Chakra, you’ll struggle with problems such as:

  • Resentment and hatred of others
  • Lack of fulfilling relationships
  • Stinginess
  • Suspicion and paranoia
  • Jealousy
  • Lack of empathy/cold-heartedness
  • Aggression and passive-aggression
  • Self-victimisation and martyrdom
  • Loneliness and isolation
  • Possessiveness
  • Grudge-holding
  • Melancholy
  • Mood swings
  • Sadness and depression
  • Trust issues
  • Heart issues (high blood pressure, etc.)

The Heart Chakra is an important chakra to heal as it is often thought as central to our well-being and is commonly referred to as the “Imperial Chakra.”

Hawthorn is a perfect choice for healing heart-centered problems. By itself, Hawthorn Berry has a sweet and slightly tart taste, almost like sour apple sauce.

Hawthorn Berry has been long used to treat heart problems related to Heart Chakra blockages such as angina, arrhythmia, and unstable blood pressure. Hawthorn Berry also helps remove bad cholesterol from the blood stream, reduces anxiety, and has powerful antioxidant properties that remove free radicals from the body.

You might like to buy Hawthorn Berry in a tea blend, such as the certified organic box from Buddha Teas which is specifically made for the Heart Chakra. This tea blend is also infused with Rose Quartz and is 100% natural. You can buy yours here. (Alternatively, if you want to save money, you could try the bundle of seven chakra teas which is a beautiful way to instantly stabilize every chakra.)

5. Throat Chakra — Slippery Elm

The Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) is the center of self-expression and truth. If you have a blocked Throat Chakra, you’ll struggle with issues such as:

  • Social anxiety
  • Shyness
  • Inability to express yourself
  • Excessive inhibition
  • Dishonesty
  • Miscommunication in relationships
  • Neck pain
  • Throat problems

Slippery Elm tastes best when combined with other herbs as it is rather chalky by itself (check out Buddha tea’s mix). However, this shrub has important throat chakra cleansing benefits.

Slippery Elm is essentially tree bark from the Slippery Elm tree that is grounded into a fine powder. Traditionally, Slippery Elm has been used to heal throat conditions as it turns to gel once in contact with water, but it also has a wide range of other benefits. Slippery Elm helps to lubricate the stomach and intestines which help heal issues such as indigestion and stomach ulcers. This bark also supports the adrenal glands and reduces overall inflammation in the body.

You can buy a certified organic tea blend of Slippery Elm infused with the essence of Aquamarine right here. (Or, you might prefer to get the affordable and convenient bundle of seven chakra teas for complete mind-body clearing.)

6. Third Eye Chakra — Passionflower

Your Third Eye Chakra (Ajna), is the center of wisdom, insight, and knowledge. If you have a blocked Third Eye Chakra, you’ll struggle with problems such as:

  • Having rigid and limiting beliefs
  • Overly intellectual and strict emphasis on logic
  • Cynicism
  • Living in a fantasy world with no basis in reality
  • Egomania
  • Poor focus
  • Easily distracted
  • Confusion
  • Naivety and ignorance
  • Lack of will power and self-discipline
  • Loss of connection with intuition
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Obsessive compulsions (OCD)
  • Mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety

Passionflower is the ideal herb for the Third Eye Chakra. Passionflower helps treat insomnia, anxiety disorders, depression, headache pain, and even drug withdrawal symptoms.

You might like to buy Passionflower in a tea blend, such as the certified organic box from Buddha Teas which is specifically made for the Third Eye Chakra. This tea blend is also infused with Sapphire and is 100% natural. You can buy yours here! (Otherwise, try the bundle of seven chakra teas. It’ll save you money.)

7. Crown Chakra — Lavender

Your Crown Chakra (Sahasrara), is your connection to higher consciousness and spirituality. If you have an imbalanced Crown Chakra, you’ll struggle with problems such as:

  • Spiritual cynicism
  • Apathy
  • Self-destruction
  • God Complex
  • Spiritual materialism/addiction
  • Dissociation
  • Disconnection from reality
  • Restlessness and frustration
  • Feeling lost
  • Existential depression
  • Loneliness
  • Emptiness

One of the most uplifting and delightfully common chakra cleansing herbs out there for the Crown Chakra is Lavender.

Lavender is so easy to grow and harvest and has a wide range of benefits that help to open up the Crown Chakra. Lavender helps to soothe headaches, enhance psychological clarity, reduce anxiety and stress, calm the nervous system, improve sleep, and treat skin conditions such as psoriasis. Most notably, Lavender is full of antioxidants which help our bodies to lower damage caused by toxins and free radicals. In fact, Lavender actually helps the body to produce antioxidants!

If you want to try a tea specifically made for the Crown Chakra, you might like to check out Buddha Tea’s organic certified blend that is infused with the essence of Amethyst. Check it out here! (Or, you might prefer to get all chakra teas in one in the chakra bundle.)

Herbs are mother earth’s way of helping us to cleanse, balance, and strengthen our bodies. As a big tea drinker, I love nothing more than to sit down in nature with a nice herbal tea brewing in my hands. As an empath, I find that tea is a quick and potent way to wind down and check in with the present moment.
